What are the main health benefits of ice skating?

There’s nothing more awe-inspiring than watching figure skaters elegantly glide along the ice, dancing and twirling so effortlessly. If you’ve always loved ice skating and you visit your local ice rink with your friends every so often, then you might be thinking about taking some ice skating lessons.

Your first few ice skating lessons will get you perfecting basic techniques like balance and poise. As your technique improves, you will be shown how to skate backwards and do a variety of twirls and tricks. Not only is ice skating fun to do and beautiful to watch, but it also has lots of great health benefits. Ice skating is a great form of exercise because it uses all your leg muscles and a lot of upper body strength. After your first ice skating session you might find yourself feeling a little achy, so it’s important to take it easy for the next couple of days, maybe stay home and play Binguez or go for a gentle stroll before you start training again. Let’s have a look at all the great health benefits of ice skating.

Muscles – Your legs get a great workout when you ice skate. You are relying on your legs to pull you along the ice, which means that in no time your thighs will become toned and strong. It is a fantastic workout for your hamstrings and quadriceps. In addition, you will strengthen your abdominal and lower back muscles because you are relying on these muscles to keep your balance on the ice.

Weight loss – Ice skating is a great way to burn off a lot of calories. It is a fun form of exercise so it couldn’t be easier to get fit and burn calories. Depending on your body weight and effort on the ice, you could burn as many as 760 calories in an hour.

Therapeutic – As you glide along the ice, you’ll find that your worries and cares melt away because it’s a very relaxing and therapeutic exercise.

Congratulations to Gianna Bozzetti! Gianna skated her way to the Silver medal at the 2012 May Day Open. She competed in the Intermediate Ladies Short event. The May Day Open is hosted by the Gardens Figure Skating Club in Laurel, MD. Way to go Gianna!!

Congratulations Club members. U.S. Figure Skating has awarded our Club the 2011-2012 ‘Plus 10′ award for registering 10 + new members this past year. Attracting new full members into the Club is a reflection on the entire membership and our strong alliance with the Ice House of New Jersey as our training facility. Well done! Our Club will be recognized at the U.S. Figure Skating Governing Council and also in the June-July issue of SKATING magazine.

IHNJFSC SKATERS ASSISTANCE SCHOLARSHIPS – APPLICATIONS DUE JUNE 28, 2012

Applications are now being accepted for skater’s assistance scholarships. The skater’s assistance scholarship program is open only to current home club members who represented the IHNJFSC in 2011-2012 competitions or tests described in each category of the application and who have maintained their IHNJFSC home club membership since the event or test and who have volunteered at least 10 hours of service to the club or whose parents have volunteered at least 10 hours to the club. Skaters must choose the category of support and are eligible for only one scholarship. The form is available under the downloadable forms section of this website.
