The next test session is Tuesday March 20, 2012. This session includes dance. NEW THIS SESSION – Critiques on one free skate program, or one moves-in-the-field pattern will be offered at the end of the session. The fee is $10 for club members and $15 for non-members. The deadline for all test applications is March 15th.

HELEN M. McLORAINE FIGURE SKATING SCHOLARSHIPS – DUE Feb. 18, 2012

The Pioneer Fund has established a scholarship program to assist eligible current and former amateur and professional ice skaters who dedicated their lives to skating and now wish to pursue a college education. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time undergraduate study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

The Pioneer Fund is a foundation of the late Helen M. McLoraine. Helen established The Pioneer Fund, a private family foundation, in the 1960s, to continue her life long tradition of support to the types of projects and organizations to which she had contributed throughout her lifetime and now through her estate. Helen, deeply influenced by her mother’s dedication to philanthropy, became a generous benefactor to others with a focus on figure skating, higher education assistance, and medical research. Helen was a private person, frugal, kind and smart, who felt a serious responsibility to the community.

Although Helen continued to run her own private successful investment business throughout her lifetime, her most cherished pastime was the sport of figure skating and attended many competitions, events, and ice shows throughout the World each year. The door to Helen’s apartment, which originally opened inward the way that most doors do, was changed to open out to the world. This was indicative of the way Helen embraced life and invited others to do the same. Helen passed away in January of 2003 doing one of the many things she enjoyed in life, watching young kids in figure skating rinks working to achieve their dreams.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. Scholarship Management Services is the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.

ICE HOUSE Basic Skills Competition Saturday, April 07, 2012 at Ice House, 111 Midtown Bridge Approach, Hackensack, NJ 07601, (201) 487- 8444

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to ALL skaters who are current eligible (ER 1.00) members of either the Basic Skills Program and/or are full members of U.S. Figure Skating. To be eligible, skaters must have submitted a membership application or be a member in good standing. Members of other organizations are eligible to compete but must be registered with the host Basic Skills Program/Club or any other Basic Skills Program/Club.

Eligibility will be based on skill level as of closing date of entries March 16, 2012. All Snowplow Sam and Basic Skills skaters through Basic 8 must skate at highest level passed and NO official U.S. Figure Skating tests may have been passed including MIF or individual dances.

For the Free skate 1-6, Test Track and Well Balanced levels, eligibility will be based only upon highest free skate test level passed (moves in the field test level will not determine skater’s competitive level). Skaters may skate at highest level passed OR one level higher BUT not both levels in the same event during the same competition.

RULES: The competition will be conducted according to the rules in the 2011 Rule Book except as stated herein. The 6.0 judging system will be used for this competition.

DEADLINE: Applications must be accompanied by entry fee and must be postmarked no later than March 16, 2012. Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the Competition Chair and will require DOUBLE the entry fee. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS except for the cancellation of an event. SHOW – Glissad Academy at Ice Land – January 14, 2012

Glissad Academy at Ice Land is hosting a show this Saturday January 14, 2012. The show is from 6 – 7:30 p.m at the Ice Land Skating Rink in Hamilton, NJ. Holiday Recital – A Brilliant Success!

Applause and kudos to all of our Holiday Recital skaters. This was surely the best recital ever. With 43 performers and 23 numbers the show was chock full of entertainment. The audience enjoyed a range of soloists, duets and group numbers from Basic Skills to Senior level skaters. This recital had it all from seasonal and holiday to techno and 80s retro!
