Membership Frequently asked Questions (FAQs)
Here are frequently asked questions regarding United States Figure Skating (USFS) memberships, in general and as they pertain to membership via the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club, and answers to these questions. This list is meant to serve as a guide to our members regarding general membership issues. If there is a question that does not appear on this list that you need addressed please contact our membership chair, Maria Morin, mariamorin@icehousenjfsc.org.
Q: Why is a United States Figure Skating membership necessary?
A: In order to test, compete or participate in figure skating shows sanctioned by USFS, a skater must have a current full USFS membership.
Q: My child is currently enrolled in the Basic Skills program and holds a Basic Skills membership. Is this the same as a USFS membership?
A: No. When skaters enroll in the Basic Skills program they receive a USFS Basic Skills membership. The Basic Skills membership allows skaters the opportunity to take USFS Basic Skills tests only (Snowplow Sam through Basic 8) and to compete in Basic Skills Competitions. However, once a skater has progressed beyond Basic 8 and begins to take USFS Standard Track tests (Pre-preliminary through Senior) or compete in USFS Standard Track events (No-Test through Senior) they will require a full USFS membership. The same is applicable to adult skaters once they progress beyond Basic 8.
Q: How do I obtain a full USFS membership?
A: Download and fill out the current USFS membership application. Please fill out the form in its entirety. Sign it and send it to the address listed on the form. Please note that a separate form is necessary for each skater even if they are part of the same family. Current members of the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club who are interested in renewing their membership should follow the same procedure.
Q: I have noticed that if I go directly the USFS website (http://www.usfigureskating.org) that I can obtain a USFS membership directly. Why should I apply for membership through the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club?
A: A skater may join USFS directly without associating themselves with a home club. These memberships are known as individual memberships. However, there are benefits to joining USFS via a home club. Members of the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club are given priority over non-members when scheduling tests hosted by Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club and are assessed a reduced test fee as compared to non-members. Additionally, we recognize our members with complimentary USFS test pins! In addition, on a yearly basis, the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club awards scholarships to all of its skaters. Monetary awards are assigned based on competitive experience, test experience and volunteer service rendered throughout each year. In order to qualify for a scholarship via Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club, one must be a member of the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club and submit a scholarship application to the Board of Directors of the Ice House of New Jersey Figure Skating Club.
